Racing Stars & Stripes in Mexico – America’s Cup Sailing Yacht

Oasis of the Seas, May 2018, Day 6

12 METRE CHALLENGE AMERICA’S CUP RACING EXPERIENCE

We are not on our Catalina 22 sailboat this time. We have upgraded for this trip!

Our second time in Cozumel Mexico was amazing! We raced a retired 1987 America’s IMG_2899.JPGCup racing yachts. I can’t begin to explain how much fun this trip was. They let us run the winches and everything! The fact that we have been introduced to the world of sailing already and know a lot of the terminology was really helpful and made the race that much more exciting. Trip advisor ranks this tour as one of the top things to do in Cozumel and we agree.

We ended our day with some shrimp fajitas, some more beer and some shopping in the port. I bought overpriced Mexican chocolate for the family. Thankfully it was good.

Jerk Chicken in Jamaica

The last time we were in Jamaica I really wanted jerk chicken! Since I am (was) a chef, one of the most important part of my travel experience is to get to eat local food. I especially would love to try food I’ve tried already back home so I can compare to know what really is close to authentic. We met a lady named Mariesha who was nice enough to drive us around and bring us to Duns River Falls. I expressed how much I want to eat something local and begged for it not to be anything touristy. She started with Jamaican beef patties and then a place that makes pudding, which is moist cake that is made in old tire rims on the side of the street. After she picked us back up from the Duns River Falls it was time to go to Scotchies for this jerk chicken she insisted was the best on the island. Unfortunately we arrived to late because a big tour bus just wiped them clean out of chicken. Imagine my disappointment because that was the stop I was looking forward to the most!

This trip was our second chance to finally get this Scotchys everyone was talking about. Yes, we made sure to tell this story to our Jamaican friends/acquaintances and they all agree it’s good food. We messaged Mariesha on Facebook and her fiance took us around this time.

Our first stop along the way was a cafe on the side of the road that had beautiful views of the beach on the second story. The next stop was the historic Richmond Hill Inn in Montego Bay. In the 1700’s it was the property of the Dewars family, you know the Scotch whisky. It also hosts several beautiful pieces from the late Barrington Watson, Jamaica’s most renowned artist. We just might have had a destination wedding if I knew about this place sooner!

Before returning to the Port of Falmouth, we finally got to indulge in some authentic jerk chicken and Red Stripe beer at Scotchies. We didn’t stop at just jerk chicken though. There was jerk pork, chicken wings, and some friend bread too. I now get why it’s called Scotchies. It’s because scotch bonnet peppers is what their house sauce is made of. So hot but oh so good.

After tuning down several offers to buy marijuana we made it back to the port with 45 min to spare so we did a little shopping at the wood carving booths. I have to say I am pretty happy with what Rob got me. One wood carving was a large mahi-mahi made out of mahogany and the other was a sweet little palm tree with 2 hearts. He had the gentleman carve our initials in each heart at “Jamaica 2018” at the bottom.

Don’t forget to follow and subscribe. Rob and I go to our next port of call and race sailboats in Mexico!

Welcome to Labadee, Haiti

Day 3 of our 7 day Royal Caribbean cruise on the Oasis of the Seas.

Our first port of call was Labadee Haiti, Royal Caribbean’s private island. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect after the several weeks we had full of rain in South Florida.

Our first stop was at the local Artisan Market where we looked around and chatted with a few of the locals. Rob of course had to put on a heavy southern accent  as he spoke with them. To be quite honest, a lot of the merchandise in the shops were the same and probably mostly from china.

We made our way to the Dragon’s Tail Coaster. I didn’t get an all day pass this year mainly because they only had one left. I insisted that Rob take it so I can just sit in the water and do absolutely nothing while he was riding it but he still got me one ride (so sweet). The coaster is a nice balance between getting to see the gorgeous views of the island and a some adrenaline at times. You get to control the speed of your cart. The only negative is the ride is over in just a couple of minutes if you go with no breaks.

We finally remembered that there was a floating bar in one of the beaches so naturally we made our way there. They had a drink called the Labadoozy and it was delicious! We missed the lunch buffet hanging out under the tiki umbrellas while we made some new friends.

Take a look at the video below and see for yourself!

Embarkation Day – Oasis of the Seas

In order to save a couple bucks and still get a balcony we opted for the Guaranty Stateroom. With Royal Caribbean this means you pay a lower price for a stateroom but you don’t get to choose which one, just the category. In our case we chose the ocean view balcony stateroom, but he had no idea which one we were going to get until the day before we boarded. The fine print says you may not get assigned a stateroom until even the day of boarding.

We arrived at the port before they even began boarding because we were that eager. The 1st thing we did was run straight to the windjammer buffet for lunch and went straight to our stateroom to check it out and we saw a dolphin swimming around in the port!

Here is the tour of our ocean view balcony stateroom – 9570

IMG_4067Day 2 was a sea day and Memorial Day so we explored the ship a little bit and then lounged around the in the pool in the Solarium most of the day. I loved how everyone (including us) wore an american flag something. I had a tank top and the ribbon on my hat, and a lot of people had bathing suits, cover ups, shirts ect. with american flags on it.

We took a picture in front of the Zoltar machine. I don’t know why but this became our thing to take a picture in front of it every time we sail. We never play it, even though I sometimes get tempted to just for fun but, we’ve done it the first 2 times on the Allure of the Seas so now I think we just have to every time!

IMG_4083.JPGThey offered a special for the specialty dining and we finally gave into the high pressure sale pitches. It was a pretty good deal when you thin about it. We love eating at Chops Grille and that costs about $45 per person for one meal. But for $80 per person we received 3 nights of specialty dining so since Day 2 was formal night we had dinner at Chops Grille that night.

Day 3 is Labadee Haiti! Follow and subscribe so you get notified when its posted!

Honeymoon on the Oasis of the Seas

Let the vacation begin – Memorial Day Weekend

We drove up to Cape Canaveral the night before our honeymoon cruise on the Oasis of the Seas to make some new friends from the Facebook roll call group for this sailing. Sub-tropical storm Alberto was on our tail the whole drive up but that didn’t ruin our spirits. We met at least 20ish of the people in the Facebook group at Grills Tiki Bar right in the port. The food was pretty good and the views were nice.

With nothing else to do but wait until the morning, we made a stop to the local IMAX theater and watched Solo.

There is a hotel close to the port called Americas Best Value Port Canaveral that cost only about $100.00. For one night’s stay, they let us park our car in their lot for the week AND shuttled us over to the port. It was no Ritz Carlton but it was clean.

Stay tuned for the next video boarding the Oasis of the Seas!
