Weekend in Lake Placid, Florida

The weekend before the 4th of July we joined my cousin, her husband and a group of people that go to Lake Placid, Florida every year. They stay at the Lakeside Cottages that is right on Lake Clay and play on their jet-skis all weekend long. This year we finally accepted their invitation.

Even though I’m pretty proud of the video above because I learned a few new editing techniques and tried it out on this one, it still doesn’t do this place any justice. The cute little cottage we stayed in was a pretty good price too.

There is a Publix down the road, but we still came prepared with coolers full of beer and food so we can drink and grill all weekend and boy did we. Lake Clay is good bass fishing. You can find a public boat ramp a block up the road, and plenty of room in the lake to jet-ski and get pulled around on a tube.

All in all, this place was very relaxing and a great time. We are all trying to come up with a good reason to go there more often.

Key Largo Kampground and Jet Skiing Through John Pennekamp State Park

IMG_20170219_141709_798The Keys was always the first place we think of when we have a long weekend. Key Largo Kampground and Marina was the destination of choice the weekend of February 19, 2017. It is an RV Park, Campground & Marina on the Edge of a Coral Reef in Key Largo, Florida. Since we live in Hollywood, Florida, we find that Key Largo is the next best thing to Key West, mainly because it is an hour and 45 min drive and Key West is 4 hours.

We got really lucky booking the campsite. When I had called the first time no one would answer the phone. I waited 30 minutes and tried again. Apparently the campground was completely booked and when I couldn’t get anyone on the phone, it was because someone was canceling their reservation at what we think is the best spot on the whole property. Our site was 1 of 3 spots off in the back corner of the property and surrounded by mangroves.

765-klk_camp_site_mapWe brought the jetski along because the campground will let you use their marina, for an extra charge of course. It was a very beautiful ride through John Pennekamp Park. Which if you have never heard of has some of the best snorkeling and diving around (click on the link). It was February and even though Florida is always hot, that doesn’t mean the water is too. There was no way we were doing any snorkeling but we are definitely planing to repeat this trip, when the water is warmer of course.

A little unsolicited advice before you stay there

It gets dark, like really dark. We had an LED flashlight, a few solar powered pathway lights (that didn’t charge up the next day on the account of the treesUntitled-1 surrounding us) and 2 of these LED camping lights but it just wasn’t enough. If you get a site with electricity then I suggest bringing a few strands of Christmas lights. It illuminates your site without bothering everyone else. Especially if you were like us and up just drinking beer all night while everyone was sleeping. The family next to us had a long strand running across their picnic table when they were having dinner while we were pointing our 2 lights towards the grill trying to cook. We are definitely buying a couple more of those LED lights and bringing some Christmas lights next time we go. They are definitely cheap enough.

Watch out for the raccoons. They will look for food and look in your cooler! It literally scared the s**t out of us when we heard that little punk open our cooler. We thought there was a person out there until we opened our tent and saw the little bugger running off.

It’s not really the partying spot. They have quiet time. It doesn’t say it on the website but they tell you when you check in.

See you on our next adventure!

The Most Romantic Thing To Do In Key West

Robert and I both [obviously] have full time jobs and we generally only get Sundays off together. So, when the stars align and somehow we get a Saturday or a Monday  we plan a quick weekend20150906_101717.jpg getaway.

With my student loans, all of our toys (motorcycles, Waverunner ect.) and our attempt to save for a house, we don’t always have a whole lot to work with for these getaways but we still want to enjoy life nonetheless. So, when Robert got off work on Saturday, we packed up the Tahoe with our tent and camping gear, hooked up the Waverunner and made our way to Key West!

We stayed at Boyd’s Campground  which is on Stock Island. That’s the island right before Key West. When traveling on a budget, camping is the most cost effective in the keys.map

It was April so the weather was perfect for it. They charge when you bring a watercraft along but they will put your ski in the water and take it out for you. The campsites are small but come with a grill and a picnic table. You have to pay extra for a site with an electrical outlet. We just brought our silent generator or charged our phones in the car.

The facilities were pretty clean. We didn’t spend much time at the campsite other than to shower and sleep so I cant say much about the amenities but I think there was a pool. Most of the afternoon was spent on the Waverunner exploring the islands.

Keep in mind that that the Keys are prime real estate, especially the further south you go. So doing anything down there isn’t cheap…even camping. Your campsite at Boyd’s is pretty small. But you get a grill and a picnic table and the view definitely makes up for it.

Untitled.pngThe moment I was waiting for.
The main reason we decided Key West for this weekend.

We came down for New Years day earlier that year and were killing time before it was acceptable to go to Irish Kevin’s and begin drinking. We came across this beautiful replica sail boat. Some guy named Dex gave us a tour of this beauty and was trying to sell us spots on the sunset sailing. It was kind of expensive but they did offer unlimited beer, wine and champagne. We politely declined and walked around some more. We contemplated going back and just doing it but by the time we said “OK lets go” it was sold out.  So here we are 3 months later. I was so excited!

The two-hour sail included passed shrimp cocktail, a cheese plate, and veggies. Yes it was $85 a person but it was so worth it. It was also kind of why we camped instead of staying at a hotel. When you are out there you hear nothing but the wind blowing through the sails and the waves crashing up on the ship. I don’t think there are words to explain the feeling. I had never been on a sail boat before this so it was an experience. And there was unlimited craft beer, wine and champagne!

The Keys brag about their sunset. Well they have the right to! Take a look at these photos. There would have been more but we were to busy hugging, kissing, watching the sun set, looking into each others eyes and whispering sweet nothings into each others ears. Oh it was our 1st anniversary by the way. 🙂

I can’t wait until we go back!
