Honeymoon on the Oasis of the Seas

Let the vacation begin – Memorial Day Weekend

We drove up to Cape Canaveral the night before our honeymoon cruise on the Oasis of the Seas to make some new friends from the Facebook roll call group for this sailing. Sub-tropical storm Alberto was on our tail the whole drive up but that didn’t ruin our spirits. We met at least 20ish of the people in the Facebook group at Grills Tiki Bar right in the port. The food was pretty good and the views were nice.

With nothing else to do but wait until the morning, we made a stop to the local IMAX theater and watched Solo.

There is a hotel close to the port called Americas Best Value Port Canaveral that cost only about $100.00. For one night’s stay, they let us park our car in their lot for the week AND shuttled us over to the port. It was no Ritz Carlton but it was clean.

Stay tuned for the next video boarding the Oasis of the Seas!

The Sailboat Prep Continues

Its been raining like crazy down here. I don’t think it has stopped for weeks so we made the best of our Sunday. While we were at Ross and Marshall’s shopping for our cruise next week we happened to stroll by a huge bin of outdoor pillows. They were really cheap too! So naturally we bought every single one with the pattern we liked.

We came home and saw it was hardly drizzling so we suddenly got motivated to clean Luna (we are calling her by her current name because we still haven’t come up with a good one yet). She was really dirty! You can tell she was sitting for years. Nothing a little dish soap and elbow grease couldn’t fix!

We are going on out honeymoon this coming Sunday so lookout for some fun cruise videos when we get back. Then back to the sailboat!

She’s almost ready and we are super excited!

Launching Our Sailboat For The 1st Time

Here is our almost beautiful 1983 Catalina 22 sailboat. We didn’t want to waste a perfectly good Sunday so we picked up the boat from Matt’s and left the mast there. We decided to put her in for a few hours just to putt around the intracoastal. The funny looks from people who knew it was sailboat without a mast was hilarious.

It was fleet week and the Ft. Lauderdale air show so we assumed the boat traffic would be pretty bad and we assumed right. It still wasn’t that bad though. We watched a bunch of cruise ships leave the port and saw a lot of cool boats, and even a battleship!

The cooler was full of beer and but we didn’t seem to need much of it. Just being high on life was enough! Much needed R & R after all the wedding planning and festivities.

She has to go back soon for a few more fixes. The radio needs to be connected and she needs some bottom paint. We might as well name her and paint that on too. Still have no idea what we should name her though… Any ideas? is “Breaking Wind” too immature?

We Got Married!

Now can we please go back to our normal life?

The wedding planning was crazy and really kept us away from gallivanting about. But, even though the wedding itself went by in a flash, it was all worth it. Take a look at some of these pictures. We had a lovely barefoot beach wedding at John U Lloyd State Park.

The ceremony started around 5:30pm on April 20th, 2018. The sun was on its way down and the humidity wasn’t due to hit us for at least another few weeks. We were very lucky. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect.

Before our first dance, we had a first drink. We entered the hall with Hollywood Brewing Co. Mango IPA in hand. The food was amazing (thank God!) from Rojo Kitchen. And that cake topper! The cake was amazing but that cake topper was Apple’s mothers idea. Good job mom!

So now that all the planning is over, what’s next? Well… let’s start on the honeymoon cruise! Last night we found (and booked right away) a great last minute deal on a balcony on the Oasis of the Seas for a May 27th sailing. The Oasis is now located at Port Canaveral which is just a 2 hour drive from here.

If you’re interested in the details of the wedding planning go to Apple’s blog: AfternoonsWithApple.com She will be posting everything her creative mind came up with in our sorta traditional and hints of not so traditional wedding.

Update on the sailboat

We still need a new sail and our buddy Matt is just about finished fixing her up. However we do want a paint job so that will be a little longer before we get her out on the water.

Our Fixer Upper Sailboat Update

A quick update on our Catalina 22 sailboat that we picked up about a month ago.

First we want to send a big thank you to our buddy Matt at ProWorx Powersports who has been helping us out with all this work.

We tried to connect everything and step the mast ourselves just to make sure everything was there and we ran into some problems. The first problem would probably have to be rushing into it without really knowing our boat first. Another problem was the crutch in the back wasn’t high enough which we realized after watching some more YouTube Videos. We had a hard time raising the mast and when we finally got it close we noticed the screw was loose that connected the mast step to the support. After more YouTube and googling we saw that it wasn’t going to be to difficult to fix but we decided we definitely need some help by someone who knows a little more about sailboats than we do.

img_3657.jpgMatt has had the boat for about couple of weeks and has made a lot of progress. The wiring has been completely updated. Two battery boxes have been installed. He put new LED salon and courtesy lights. Repaired the mast step which thankfully was an easy fix. The bilge got painted and so many more little things. Rob has been by there several times a week dropping off shopping lists of parts and things.

We took the sail to a sail maker to repair it. They were backed up by a couple of weeks so when we finally received that call, they told us it was irreparable. Our plan was to take her out on a little trip for our honeymoon but with our wedding 16 days away I don’t think we will be buying big ticket items like a new sail right away.

IMG_3623My car broke the other day. The ball joint broke off the front right tire which made the axle to break which somehow caused the oil to completely drain out. I believe it hit the oil filter. There’s a silver lining to this story I promise. This happened in front of a Firestone so the guys immediately came out with car jack and helped me move out of the middle of the road. While waiting for the tow truck, Rob came by to wait with me and we finally stepped into this teak furniture store we keep meaning to stop into some day. The owner was really nice. He saw what had happened to my car and next thing you know we are browsing his shop talking boats. Rob asked if he had some teak we could buy or have him cut for us to make the dinette table because our boat didn’t have it. Next thing I see is Rob holding this piece of teak and the guy said we can have it because we were having such a bad day. Nice people still do exist!

img_3629.jpg

We will update again soon. She is almost done and we can’t wait to name her and put her in the water.

See you on our next adventure!

Key Largo Kampground and Jet Skiing Through John Pennekamp State Park

IMG_20170219_141709_798The Keys was always the first place we think of when we have a long weekend. Key Largo Kampground and Marina was the destination of choice the weekend of February 19, 2017. It is an RV Park, Campground & Marina on the Edge of a Coral Reef in Key Largo, Florida. Since we live in Hollywood, Florida, we find that Key Largo is the next best thing to Key West, mainly because it is an hour and 45 min drive and Key West is 4 hours.

We got really lucky booking the campsite. When I had called the first time no one would answer the phone. I waited 30 minutes and tried again. Apparently the campground was completely booked and when I couldn’t get anyone on the phone, it was because someone was canceling their reservation at what we think is the best spot on the whole property. Our site was 1 of 3 spots off in the back corner of the property and surrounded by mangroves.

765-klk_camp_site_mapWe brought the jetski along because the campground will let you use their marina, for an extra charge of course. It was a very beautiful ride through John Pennekamp Park. Which if you have never heard of has some of the best snorkeling and diving around (click on the link). It was February and even though Florida is always hot, that doesn’t mean the water is too. There was no way we were doing any snorkeling but we are definitely planing to repeat this trip, when the water is warmer of course.

A little unsolicited advice before you stay there

It gets dark, like really dark. We had an LED flashlight, a few solar powered pathway lights (that didn’t charge up the next day on the account of the treesUntitled-1 surrounding us) and 2 of these LED camping lights but it just wasn’t enough. If you get a site with electricity then I suggest bringing a few strands of Christmas lights. It illuminates your site without bothering everyone else. Especially if you were like us and up just drinking beer all night while everyone was sleeping. The family next to us had a long strand running across their picnic table when they were having dinner while we were pointing our 2 lights towards the grill trying to cook. We are definitely buying a couple more of those LED lights and bringing some Christmas lights next time we go. They are definitely cheap enough.

Watch out for the raccoons. They will look for food and look in your cooler! It literally scared the s**t out of us when we heard that little punk open our cooler. We thought there was a person out there until we opened our tent and saw the little bugger running off.

It’s not really the partying spot. They have quiet time. It doesn’t say it on the website but they tell you when you check in.

See you on our next adventure!

We Bought A Sailboat

After a lot of weighing options we have made our decision on which sailboat to buy. We are very excited (and nervous) about our new adventure. Our wedding is is in 32 days and are really hoping we can get it put together in time for a honeymoon sailing trip! Wait… we need to learn how to properly sail first. Ah this is going to be fun.

Now what do we name her?

Sailboat Shopping

UntitledSince we went to Key Largo for the introductory sailing course we both have been pretty obsessed with the idea of getting a sail boat. The instructor Jorge said that the Catalina 22 that we took the lesson on was the perfect 1st sail boat because it is easy to learn on, very trailer-able and cheap. So, we started looking and looking until we narrowed it down to a couple. One in Sanford FL and the other in Jupiter. It was difficult to make appointments with either of the sellers to see the boats. The one in Sanford was a marina and the boat was on consignment and the boat in Jupiter was hard to see because the owner was always traveling for work. It worked out perfectly because it gave us enough time to list and sell one of our bikes.

I told Rob “No new toys unless we get rid of one so without hesitating he said “well, lets sell the WR250r”

wr

I’m gonna miss her, she was fun to ride but we can always buy another one later. At least with the sail boat we can do more and have other people on there with us.

It is going to be a tough decision between the 2 boats here’s a brief list why:

The boat in Sanford

1977

Pros

  • Everything is put together
  • its already in the water
  • new everything
  • It has everything including cushions and the dinette table

Cons

  • WAY more expensive
  • hull wasn’t in the best shape
  • jell coat was cracking

The boat in Jupiter

1983

Pros

  • hull in better shape
  • wood in the interior in A LOT better condition
  • the boat is in better condition over all
  • half the price
  • we can learn a lot by having to put it all together

Cons

  • we have to put it all together before we can use it
  • no cushions or dinette table
  • needs a paint job
