Best Small Quiet Generator – Cummins Onan P4500i

One problem we needed solving lately was being able to boondocks a night or 2 on the RV before or after going to a campsite. Why you ask? Well, so we can take longer weekend trips and Rob can work from the RV. All he needs is an internet connection, power to the laptop and… well… air conditioning!

We wanted something that would also be perfect for the sailboat too, because after all, sailboats are just floating RV’s anyway. Our biggest hinderance from taking the sailboat or RV anywhere further than a few hours from South Florida is Robert’s job. Haha I know how that sounds! Work really does get in the way of our play (that’s so sarcastic by the way)!

After months of research and testing our small generator and my dad’s Honda EU3000is (which worked but was super old and leaked a bit), we came the across the Cummins Onan P4500i. The only problem was it was always sold out and that’s why it took us months to research. One day it magically appeared, only 1 in stock so we stanched it up faster than a fat kid eating cake.

In this video, we unbox and review the Cummins ONAN P4500i Digital Inverter Generator. We find out if it can start a 15k BTU A/C and remain relatively quiet under load. We use our Db meter and test the sound levels as well.

We Got a Free Boat!

We Got a Catalina 22 for free! A very generous couple gave us a 1973 Catalina 22 with no strings attached and it has quite a few of the very expensive parts we’ve been missing from Luna. Watch it here!

Luckily Rob likes to take a peak at all the sites and see whats for sale from time to time. I mean, that’s how we found the amazing dinghy we got for such a great price. As soon as this couple posted a free Catalina 22 you better believe Rob was all over that. Emailed, called, called again… until they agreed to hold it for us. We went to their house that night to seal the deal. We wanted to make sure they knew we were serious and just needed time to put Luna in the water to free up our trailer. In the mean time we took home a few things we were able to fit in the Tahoe.

This family turned out to be really nice, and huge Disney fans. We stayed and chit chatted with them for a while. It was really great to hear the husband say to Rob that out of all the people who wanted this boat he was glad to give it to us.

Take a look at the video to see all the great things we got! Until next time.

Luna Has A Leak

In between some more more rainy days we finally found the time to clean up Luna and see what we have to do next. That’s when we discovered that she has a leak at the bow. No worries though, we are taking her to Matt’s again to finish up a few things on her and hopefully he has the tools to fix the leak too.

Just a few more things need to be done and a new sail then we can finally get her out in the water and sail! It’s been a couple months since we took her home and we are getting impatient! That new sail isn’t going to be cheap so we are just going to tape up the existing one in hopes that we can play a little bit before it comes apart!

The temporary dinette table we made last week need some modifications. We posted that video in a Facebook group we are part of for Catalina 22 owners and they all pointed out that we really need to round the edges! Here’s a link to the FB group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/catalina22/

We still need to decide if we want to paint her and if we even plan on changing her name. Luna isn’t so bad after all. But Breaking Wind will be funny! Imagine calling up to the bridge operator!

See you on our next adventure!

Making a Temporary Dinette Table for Luna

We are finally getting back in to normal since our wedding and honeymoon. Now we can get back to boat projects on our Catalina 22 Sailboat.

When we got our sailboat it was completely gutted no wiring, no cushions, and no dinette table. So far we got the wiring and the cushions. Now we need a table to make her more comfortable. Apple’s dad had a scrap piece of furniture grade plywood that tuned out to work pretty good.

We plan on cutting a piece of wood in the future that is the correct size and making it all pretty with carved designs and pouring some resin on it…but this will have to do for now.

The Sailboat Prep Continues

Its been raining like crazy down here. I don’t think it has stopped for weeks so we made the best of our Sunday. While we were at Ross and Marshall’s shopping for our cruise next week we happened to stroll by a huge bin of outdoor pillows. They were really cheap too! So naturally we bought every single one with the pattern we liked.

We came home and saw it was hardly drizzling so we suddenly got motivated to clean Luna (we are calling her by her current name because we still haven’t come up with a good one yet). She was really dirty! You can tell she was sitting for years. Nothing a little dish soap and elbow grease couldn’t fix!

We are going on out honeymoon this coming Sunday so lookout for some fun cruise videos when we get back. Then back to the sailboat!

She’s almost ready and we are super excited!

Launching Our Sailboat For The 1st Time

Here is our almost beautiful 1983 Catalina 22 sailboat. We didn’t want to waste a perfectly good Sunday so we picked up the boat from Matt’s and left the mast there. We decided to put her in for a few hours just to putt around the intracoastal. The funny looks from people who knew it was sailboat without a mast was hilarious.

It was fleet week and the Ft. Lauderdale air show so we assumed the boat traffic would be pretty bad and we assumed right. It still wasn’t that bad though. We watched a bunch of cruise ships leave the port and saw a lot of cool boats, and even a battleship!

The cooler was full of beer and but we didn’t seem to need much of it. Just being high on life was enough! Much needed R & R after all the wedding planning and festivities.

She has to go back soon for a few more fixes. The radio needs to be connected and she needs some bottom paint. We might as well name her and paint that on too. Still have no idea what we should name her though… Any ideas? is “Breaking Wind” too immature?

We Bought A Sailboat

After a lot of weighing options we have made our decision on which sailboat to buy. We are very excited (and nervous) about our new adventure. Our wedding is is in 32 days and are really hoping we can get it put together in time for a honeymoon sailing trip! Wait… we need to learn how to properly sail first. Ah this is going to be fun.

Now what do we name her?

See you on our next adventure!

Sailboat Shopping

UntitledSince we went to Key Largo for the introductory sailing course we both have been pretty obsessed with the idea of getting a sail boat. The instructor Jorge said that the Catalina 22 that we took the lesson on was the perfect 1st sail boat because it is easy to learn on, very trailer-able and cheap. So, we started looking and looking until we narrowed it down to a couple. One in Sanford FL and the other in Jupiter. It was difficult to make appointments with either of the sellers to see the boats. The one in Sanford was a marina and the boat was on consignment and the boat in Jupiter was hard to see because the owner was always traveling for work. It worked out perfectly because it gave us enough time to list and sell one of our bikes.

I told Rob “No new toys unless we get rid of one so without hesitating he said “well, lets sell the WR250r”

wr

I’m gonna miss her, she was fun to ride but we can always buy another one later. At least with the sail boat we can do more and have other people on there with us.

It is going to be a tough decision between the 2 boats here’s a brief list why:

The boat in Sanford

1977

Pros

  • Everything is put together
  • its already in the water
  • new everything
  • It has everything including cushions and the dinette table

Cons

  • WAY more expensive
  • hull wasn’t in the best shape
  • jell coat was cracking

The boat in Jupiter

1983

Pros

  • hull in better shape
  • wood in the interior in A LOT better condition
  • the boat is in better condition over all
  • half the price
  • we can learn a lot by having to put it all together

Cons

  • we have to put it all together before we can use it
  • no cushions or dinette table
  • needs a paint job

The Most Romantic Thing To Do In Key West

Robert and I both [obviously] have full time jobs and we generally only get Sundays off together. So, when the stars align and somehow we get a Saturday or a Monday  we plan a quick weekend20150906_101717.jpg getaway.

With my student loans, all of our toys (motorcycles, Waverunner ect.) and our attempt to save for a house, we don’t always have a whole lot to work with for these getaways but we still want to enjoy life nonetheless. So, when Robert got off work on Saturday, we packed up the Tahoe with our tent and camping gear, hooked up the Waverunner and made our way to Key West!

We stayed at Boyd’s Campground  which is on Stock Island. That’s the island right before Key West. When traveling on a budget, camping is the most cost effective in the keys.map

IMG_20160409_130717-ANIMATION.gif

It was April so the weather was perfect for it. They charge when you bring a watercraft along but they will put your ski in the water and take it out for you. The campsites are small but come with a grill and a picnic table. You have to pay extra for a site with an electrical outlet. We just brought our silent generator or charged our phones in the car.

The facilities were pretty clean. We didn’t spend much time at the campsite other than to shower and sleep so I cant say much about the amenities but I think there was a pool. Most of the afternoon was spent on the Waverunner exploring the islands.

Keep in mind that that the Keys are prime real estate, especially the further south you go. So doing anything down there isn’t cheap…even camping. Your campsite at Boyd’s is pretty small. But you get a grill and a picnic table and the view definitely makes up for it.

boyds.jpg

Untitled.pngThe moment I was waiting for.
The main reason we decided Key West for this weekend.

We came down for New Years day earlier that year and were killing time before it was acceptable to go to Irish Kevin’s and begin drinking. We came across this beautiful replica sail boat. Some guy named Dex gave us a tour of this beauty and was trying to sell us spots on the sunset sailing. It was kind of expensive but they did offer unlimited beer, wine and champagne. We politely declined and walked around some more. We contemplated going back and just doing it but by the time we said “OK lets go” it was sold out.  So here we are 3 months later. I was so excited!

The two-hour sail included passed shrimp cocktail, a cheese plate, and veggies. Yes it was $85 a person but it was so worth it. It was also kind of why we camped instead of staying at a hotel. When you are out there you hear nothing but the wind blowing through the sails and the waves crashing up on the ship. I don’t think there are words to explain the feeling. I had never been on a sail boat before this so it was an experience. And there was unlimited craft beer, wine and champagne!

The Keys brag about their sunset. Well they have the right to! Take a look at these photos. There would have been more but we were to busy hugging, kissing, watching the sun set, looking into each others eyes and whispering sweet nothings into each others ears. Oh it was our 1st anniversary by the way. 🙂

I can’t wait until we go back!
